How to Calculate a Discount
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. Subtract that savings amount from the original price.
Savings = Original price × (Discount ÷ 100)
Sale price = Original price − Savings
Example: 25% Off an $80 Item
Savings: $80 × 0.25 = $20.00
Sale price: $80 − $20 = $60.00
Common Discount Questions
Can I enter a decimal discount?
Yes. Enter 12.5 for a 12.5% discount.
What happens at 0% or 100%?
A 0% discount leaves the price unchanged. A 100% discount reduces the sale price to $0.00.
Does this include sales tax?
No. You can use the Sales Tax Calculator to apply a tax rate separately.
Can I add two discounts together?
Successive discounts apply to the reduced price, so simply adding the percentages gives a different result. For two successive discounts, calculate the first and use its sale price as the original price for the second.
How are prices rounded?
The original price and savings are rounded to the nearest cent. The sale price is the rounded original price minus the rounded savings.
