How the estimate works
Divide the appliance's watts by 1,000 to get kilowatts. Multiply by hours used and your electricity rate to find the cost for a day of use. Monthly cost multiplies that daily amount by the days used per month; yearly cost multiplies the monthly amount by 12.
For example, a 1,500-watt heater used 8 hours a day at $0.15 per kWh uses 12 kWh and costs $1.80 per day of use. At 30 days per month, that is $54 per month or $648 per year.
Use the per-kWh rate from your electric bill. Some bills include fixed fees, tiered rates, taxes, or time-based pricing, which this estimate does not include. An appliance that cycles on and off may use less energy than its rated wattage suggests.
